My cousin had to go to the hospital because of a severe migraine and he was bleeding from the nose and the ears at one point but the doctor basically accused him of lying. This has been an ongoing problem for at least a week and he went to the hospital before as well. What could cause this?
Thanks.

Dhandapani Premkumar and Premkumar Remya asked:

You’ve probably ridden the migraine train many times. Perhaps you see an aura — a jagged line or crescent of flickering light — that acts like a warning whistle of the approaching headache. Like an old-fashioned steam locomotive chugging along, the pain builds slowly, but steadily. Bright light stabs your eyes. You may feel nauseated or even vomit. All you can think about is lying down in a dark, quiet room where you can ride it out.

While scientists still debate the exact mechanisms in the brain that cause migraines, they’ve made great strides in finding new treatments to derail the migraine train. Some of these treatments are older medications originally designed for ailments other than migraines. Some medicines are used as soon as the migraine begins, while others are taken daily to help prevent migraines.

This guide will help you weigh the pros and cons of a variety of treatments, to help you determine the best course of action for you and your migraines.

Treatment Options -

Although there’s much you can do to help prevent migraines — such as avoid triggers, exercise regularly and keep stress under control — most people who live with migraines also need medication.

Fortunately, medication options for migraines have expanded greatly in the last decade — giving you more choices than ever for keeping migraine disruption to a minimum. Some of these drugs were originally designed to treat other conditions, such as epilepsy or hypertension.

Migraine medications can be divided into two broad categories of treatment:

Acute, to be taken only when you have a migraine

Preventive, to be taken every day to ward off migraines

Various nontraditional and emerging therapies may be helpful in some cases, too.

Cindy Heller asked:

Have you ever wonder what the exact cause of migraine is? Sadly, it has yet to be discovered, since migraine causes has several theories, and many cases are diagnosed with unknown cause.

Some of the explanations may be issues in the central nervous system, a different environment or changes in your body. But recent research has concluded that migraine can have hereditary roots, and it may pass from generation to generation, usually indicated by an inflammation in the blood vessels which causes pain in the area.

There are plenty of trigging stimulus for a migraine headache such as: hormonal imbalance, bad sleeping habits, certain foods, alcohol or drugs consumption, episodes of stress, certain medicines and perfumes. Although these stimulus themselves are not the cause for the headache but the trigger, avoiding them can reduce migraine episodes, both in intensity as in frequency.

A migraine episode is extremely painful, and the pain changes and becomes more acute when moving around, coughing or lowering the head. The pain takes diverse forms, it can be pulsating or throbbing, and it can also cause dizziness, vomiting and sensibility to the light and sound. Migraine headaches are so painful that the person finds it difficult to carry a normal, everyday life while having a migraine episode.

What’s a migraine headache like?

Those who suffer or have ever suffered a migraine headache know the answer very well. A migraine headache starts with pain located on one side of the head, but it gradually spreads. It’s extremely painful and it gets worse with physical activity, even with everyday life activities. It’s sometimes accompanied by nausea sensation and vomit. Usually, people who suffer from migraine headaches also become sensitive to sounds and sources of light. If the person doesn’t take any type of medication, a migraine episode could last anywhere from an afternoon to three days. The frequency varies from person to person since episodes may occur once or twice a week or a year.

Another theory claims that the inflammation produced in the blood vessels alongside with hormones and chemical released into the body may cause the painful migraine episodes.

Recent research has shown that smoking can cause severe migraine headaches, both in smokers and in second-hand smokers. This is due to nicotine. Nicotine makes the blood vessels in the head to narrow, therefore causing a headache.

Stop looking for the exact cause of migraine. Go see your doctor instead, since migraine headaches cannot be solved with regular over the counter painkiller, but your doctor will prescribe a specific medicine for migraine.

I KNOW that one’s for migraine and one’s for others…What I’m asking is, is there actually a big difference between one and the other?

It looks like they use the same medical ingredient, so how exactly is one targeted at migraines and the other not?

euloki asked:

I’ve had what I thought was a tension headache for three days now. It is persistent and has limited my activity. I would start my day being active but by the middle of the day all I would want to do is lay down and wait it out. I’ve tried different tactics: Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen (with Caffeine) and lots of water but none of these take the edge off. Some times I feel it behind my right eye, other times I feel it reach from my brow to the back of my head. the pressure increases to a pounding/throbbing sensation when I lower my head, say to tie my sneakers.

This evening, I took two 500mg Acetaminophen with 65mg caffeine and I think I had a reaction. I became very light-headed and if I moved to quickly I’d stumble or sway into things. I did have a Soda an hour or so after the medicine, so I don’t know if that was the cause of the reaction. No Alcohol was taken.

Is this normal for a headache to resist OTC medicine? Why am I light-headed? I’m not sensitive to sunlight, but fluorescent are painful. Is this a migraine?
always had good blood pressure, no tumors in the family history, good eyesight…could be caused from sitting upright (not slouching) on a stool for 5 hours…
** it is now persisting for 4 days. rest only relieves the pain momentarily but when I start becoming active again it returns.
I’ve heard that menstruation can cause migraines, but could it really last the entire duration?
