Cindy Heller asked:

Have you ever wonder what the exact cause of migraine is? Sadly, it has yet to be discovered, since migraine causes has several theories, and many cases are diagnosed with unknown cause.

Some of the explanations may be issues in the central nervous system, a different environment or changes in your body. But recent research has concluded that migraine can have hereditary roots, and it may pass from generation to generation, usually indicated by an inflammation in the blood vessels which causes pain in the area.

There are plenty of trigging stimulus for a migraine headache such as: hormonal imbalance, bad sleeping habits, certain foods, alcohol or drugs consumption, episodes of stress, certain medicines and perfumes. Although these stimulus themselves are not the cause for the headache but the trigger, avoiding them can reduce migraine episodes, both in intensity as in frequency.

A migraine episode is extremely painful, and the pain changes and becomes more acute when moving around, coughing or lowering the head. The pain takes diverse forms, it can be pulsating or throbbing, and it can also cause dizziness, vomiting and sensibility to the light and sound. Migraine headaches are so painful that the person finds it difficult to carry a normal, everyday life while having a migraine episode.

What’s a migraine headache like?

Those who suffer or have ever suffered a migraine headache know the answer very well. A migraine headache starts with pain located on one side of the head, but it gradually spreads. It’s extremely painful and it gets worse with physical activity, even with everyday life activities. It’s sometimes accompanied by nausea sensation and vomit. Usually, people who suffer from migraine headaches also become sensitive to sounds and sources of light. If the person doesn’t take any type of medication, a migraine episode could last anywhere from an afternoon to three days. The frequency varies from person to person since episodes may occur once or twice a week or a year.

Another theory claims that the inflammation produced in the blood vessels alongside with hormones and chemical released into the body may cause the painful migraine episodes.

Recent research has shown that smoking can cause severe migraine headaches, both in smokers and in second-hand smokers. This is due to nicotine. Nicotine makes the blood vessels in the head to narrow, therefore causing a headache.

Stop looking for the exact cause of migraine. Go see your doctor instead, since migraine headaches cannot be solved with regular over the counter painkiller, but your doctor will prescribe a specific medicine for migraine.

Whether you are a man, woman or child if you are constantly suffering from headaches or migraines, it is important for you to learn the difference between the two. Understanding what makes a headache different from a migraine and visa versa is essential for knowing how to treat them individually. Headaches and migraines are different bodily conditions and therefore need to be treated differently and understood in order to do so.

A migraine is a headache which initiates your blood vessels to dilate and constrict. This then releases the pain throughout your head which can last anywhere from 4hours to 72 hours. You may experience anything from mild to severe pain but the length of the pain is what can easily identify it as a migraine versus a headache. Take a look at the list of symptoms below that can aid in identifying a migraine from a headache.

Sensitivity to light Blurred vision Abdominal pain Vomiting Pale complexion Loss of appetite Dizziness Fever Feeling warm and then cold

A simple headache is not capable of creating these symptoms throughout your body. If you can relate to any combination of these symptoms, you are not merely suffering from an everyday headache.

An everyday headache is often referred to as a tension headache. This type of headache produces tightness in the neck as well as the muscles in the scalp and fascia. These headaches are often caused by lack of sleep or stress. A mere lifestyle change is all that is required to eliminate these tension headaches from your life permanently.

On the other hand migraine headaches deal more with the chemicals within your body, cells and energy production. Changing your lifestyle is often not enough to eliminate migraines from your life, especially if they are as frequent as a few times a month. With many more symptoms associated with migraine headaches than tension headaches it is important to understand that aspirin is not enough to correct this health problem.

By comparing the effects of headaches and migraines you will see that a simple headache, although it does cause a great deal of discomfort does not disrupt your daily activities. On the other side of the spectrum, migraines can be quite debilitating the longer they last and more the severe they become.

If you find that you are experiencing either a headaches or migraines on a regular basis it is time to consult with your physician regarding treatments. Over the counter products may be enough to temporarily heal your headache but if they come and go more than 3-4 times per month than you need to find out why. Migraines on the other hand are more common to be experienced several times a month and more intense forms of treatment need to be considered. Many people today are leaning towards natural vitamins and minerals they more and more studies prove their abilities to heal migraines without side effects.

Nearly everyone has had a headache. But, there are some people that have learned how to eliminate them and during the year they might have one or two. Most of these headaches are usually related to stress, depression or anxiety. The most common type of headache is a tension headache. Tension headaches are due to tightening of muscles in your shoulders, neck, scalp and jaw. You are most likely to get tension headaches if you work too much, don’t get enough sleep, miss meals or use of alcohol.

Very few headaches have serious underlying causes, but those that do require urgent medical attention. For example, a severe headache may be a sign of meningitis. Then there are the most common headaches in women – the migraine headaches. Migraines can originate from some brain disorder, from neck vertebrae shifting, or from anxiety. In elderly people, a headache with tenderness of the scalp or temple may be due to temporal arthritis, in which blood vessels in the head become inflamed.

Now, why is it that headaches become a common problem among people? They become a common problem since they affect our daily routine. A mild or severe headache is a nuisance, which takes the joy out of life. Once you have a headache, you became agitated and irritable it becomes hard for you to focus on what you’re doing. Headaches decrease your awareness and give you tunnel vision – vision where you are concentrating your pain and not what is happening around you.

According to a recent survey, seven out of ten people have at least one headache a year. The majority of headaches last for only a few hours, but some can persist for weeks. Migraine headaches are the most severe headaches, which can last all day and can occur everyday. Nearly forty-five million Americans suffers from chronic headaches and most of these headaches cost billions of dollars in lost productivity every year and plenty of misery.

A majority of headaches come from anxiety and neurosis. I know many people will deny that they are neurotic, but this does not change that fact that they are. Denial is the first signs of neurosis. People don’t know how neurotic or how much stress or anxiety they have. They go day by day stressing over their day job, their children, their school, and the relationships they have. Stress causes neck and shoulder muscle tension causing imbalances in the muscles holding the neck vertebras in place. This can lead to simple or severe headaches.

If you have re-occurring headaches, take time to get a shoulder and neck massages every once in a while. Compliment this with getting a chiropractic neck adjustment to release the muscle imbalances that can cause your headaches.

Headaches can have many causes, but serious causes of headaches are rare. Sometimes headaches warn of a more serious disorder. But, if you have a sudden or severe headache, it is best to seek medical help right away to see if it is related to a serious disorder or just related to your unhealthy lifestyle.

The short answer is this: Dilated blood vessels can cause or contribute to tension headaches. Caffeine is believed to shrink blood vessels, which helps relieve the pressure. Caffeine also facilitates the action of the other ingredients.

There are now several drugs on the market, both prescription and non prescription, in which caffeine is blended with one or more drugs to create effective “combination” pain relievers.

For example, in Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine (sold here as Butalbital / APAP / CAFF, but also called Fioricet) each of the three active ingredients plays a different role:

1. Butalbital is a powerful barbiturate sedative with muscle relaxing and anti-anxiety properties. It helps calm the brain.

2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) relieves pain, eases inflammation and brings down fevers. It also boosts the potency of the Butalbital so less is needed.

3. Caffeine constricts swollen blood vessels to relieve pain and pressure.

That triple action is why Fioricet / Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine is often prescribed for people who suffer from tension headaches or migraines.

Here are some other common questions and answers about the effects of caffeine in pain relievers like Fioricet.

Q and A About Caffeine and Pain Relief

Q: If caffeine is a pain reliever, couldn’t I just drink coffee to get rid of my headaches?

A: It depends on what kind of headaches you get and how bad they are, but the caffeine in coffee may actually provide you with some pain relief.

A study of tension headache sufferers produced some fascinating results. Researchers at the Diamond Headache Clinic found that 200 mg of caffeine (the amount in 1-2 regular cups of coffee) gave the same level of pain relief as 400 mg of ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) in their subjects. They also found the coffee gave faster relief than the ibuprofen.

But the best pain reliever in their study was caffeine in combination with ibuprofen, which gave fast and much longer lasting relief than either caffeine or ibuprofen alone.

Q: What is the caffeine content in pain relievers?

A: It differs depending on the product. Each Fioricet / Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine tablet that we sell contains 40 mg of caffeine. Other pain relievers may contain more or less caffeine than Fioricet. Check the product label for details.

Q: If I take a pain reliever that contains caffeine before bedtime, will it keep me awake?

A: It depends on your sensitivity to caffeine. Two Fioricet / Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine tablets contain a total of 80 mg of caffeine, which is about the same as one average cup of brewed coffee (there’s between 80 and 125 mg of caffeine in a cup of coffee, depending on how strong it is).

Q: If I drink coffee and take Butalbital containing caffeine at the same time, can I expect to have any side effects?

A: When taking Fioricet, check the caffeine content of beverages like coffee, tea and cola as well as all prescription and non-prescription drugs you take. Avoid taking too much caffeine as it could cause nervousness, shakiness and fast heartbeat.

However, drowsiness is actually a much more common side effect of the Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine combination.

Here are the possible side effects listed for Fioricet / Butalbital, Acetaminophen and Caffeine:

* drowsiness

* upset stomach, stomach pain

* nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite

* depression

* lightheadedness, dizziness, confusion

* tiredness, weakness

* shortness of breath

* dry mouth

* agitation, anxiety, irritability

* rash or itching

* headache

* constipation

More serious but rare side effects like difficulty breathing, low blood sugar or unusual bleeding are possible when taking Fioricet and should be reported to a doctor immediately.

Summary

Since caffeine has pain relieving properties and few if any known negative side effects, it has been added to the active ingredients of several different pain relievers. The effects of caffeine in these products is to lessen the pressure that contributes to headache pain and help the other ingredients work more effectively.

Do you suffer from agonizing migraines on a regular basis? Is the treatment you are using safe, effective, and affordable? If you answered no to either of these questions, you owe it to yourself to read on and learn more about my safe natural migraine cure.

Migraine headaches are among the most serious and painful type of headaches. They are usually described as an intense, throbbing or pounding pain that involves your temple, forehead, around the eyes, or the back of the head. They can also be accompanied by flashing, brightly colored lights in a zigzag pattern usually starting in the middle of the visual field and progressing outward and can also include abnormal tastes and smells. Severe migraines can last for several days, but using my safe natural migraine cure, you can easily eliminate migraine pain in a matter of minutes.

Migraines are caused by the enlargement of blood vessels and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around these blood vessels. As your blood vessels enlarge, the nerves surrounding them stretch. This stretching action causes the nerves to release chemicals. These chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery, which intensifies the pain.

About 10% of the world’s population suffers from migraine headaches. And this serious problem is largely under-treated and, in most sufferers, undiagnosed. In fact, less than half of migraine headache sufferers are diagnosed by their doctors.

For most individuals, the first course of treatment for migraines is an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, among others. Your doctor can also prescribe other medications like triptans to relieve the pain from migraine headaches. But these remedies only treat the symptoms of migraines; that is, they are only effective once the pain begins. And most of these treatments can have very serious side effects, you are much better off using a natural migraine cure.

Using traditional migraine remedies on an ongoing basis can also be very expensive. And, they only mask your headache symptoms. They do nothing to eliminate the cause of your headaches. Using these traditional treatments, your headaches will return again and again! On the other hand, my natural migraine cure works in just minutes and will eliminate migraines from your life forever.

Alternative holistic medical approaches can also be effective for some migraine sufferers. Of course, you should discuss these alternative approaches with your doctor before trying any of these treatments.

If you suffer from painful migraines, you owe it to yourself to check out my natural migraine cure. It gets rid of migraine pain in just minutes and it eliminates them forever. For more information on this revolutionary, safe treatment; go to Natural Migraine Cure!

Migraine is one of the most painful and debilitating conditions a person may suffer from and what is worse, there is not much you can do about it. Migraine headaches are often caused by the changes in the shape and size of the blood vessels that are found in the head. The blood vessels may expand or an inflammation may occur in the tissues that are found in that area.

Compared to the usual type of headache, the tension headache, which often occur on the entire head area, the pain in migraine headaches is more localized and much more specialized. It is however harder to predict when it will occur as migraine headaches do not present any warning signs. In fact, these types of headache will just happen when you least expect it to.

There are however kinds of migraines where some symptoms may be observed. One type is what is commonly called as the classic migraine headache where in the person suffering from it may see a hallucination called ‘aura’ before it actually occurs. Auras are visual hallucinations that resemble lights or zigzagging lines in the person’s line of vision. The hallucination can last from about 15 minutes up to an hour. The duration vary from one case to another. There may also be pain in the areas surrounding the eyes, temporary blind spots and blurred vision.

As to what exactly causes this to happen in such an unsystematic way, no one knows yet. Ongoing researches about the underlying causes of migraines have not yielded much and debates are still going on. Some specialists believe that migraine headaches may be caused by the constriction in the blood vessel, particularly in the electronic changes in the vessels that are similar with what happens during seizures. Others feel that migraines are actually hereditary and people with history of migraines in the family will most likely suffer from the problem.

A migraine headache should not be confused with the common headache, which a person may suffer from every now and then. They are poles different from one another. The migraine headache, for instance can last from four to 72 hours while the common headache, or what is commonly referred to by medical practitioners as tension headaches, can last only for a few hours. Pain is also more localized with the migraine headache, often occurring on the sides of the head while tension headaches can encompass the entire head area. Another difference is the intensity of the pain.

Tension headaches are milder and duller in comparison while migraine headaches can be really severe, accompanied by pounding throbbing pain that only increases. Migraine headaches can also be accompanied by other physical problems such as sensitivity to light, sound and odors as well as nausea and vomiting.

Migraine does not announce itself in a set of early symptoms. The recurring headaches just happen, often catching the person by surprise. There is however one kind where in the person may see a visual hallucination, called an aura, before the actual migraine headache occurs. This kind is called the classic migraine headache.

Environmental and other physiological factors may also contribute in the occurrence of migraine headaches. One factor is stress-related. Over exertion and over fatigue especially in the eye area can cause severe migraine. Depression and anxiety are also factors that you should look into.

Other medical conditions that can start a migraine attack are colds, cough, influenza, and sinusitis. Food and diet may also play a role. Some experts believe that eating chocolates, drinking coffee and abusing alcoholic drinks may contribute in the attack. Sensorial triggers such as over bright lights, too much noise and strong odors may also trigger an attack.

The classic migraine headache is a lot different from what specialists call the common headaches, which occurs without any warning whatsoever. There is also the complicated migraines, which may be a manifestation of more serious medical problems in the nervous system. Often, this type migraine headache is accompanied by speech, movement and motor irregularities.

An estimated eight out of ten people in the United States will injure their back at some point during their lives. Few of these problems will require extended treatment, but persistent back problems and back pain can still be very uncomfortable and stressful for many of us.

Managing and relieving back pain is not a simple process. The experience of back pain is subjective; so it’s often difficult to easily measure the level of treatment necessary. In fact, many health providers who treat back pain find it challenging to obtain the measurable signs in order diagnose a patient’s symptoms. Additionally, everyone’s experience of back pain is different.

Back pain descriptions range from the slight — such as; dull, sharp, and throbbing, to the extreme such as; pulsating, stabbing and shock-like — just to name a few. People experience and describe back pain so differently partly due to its varied and complex origins. In fact, pain originates from numerous places in the body, such as muscles, bones, nerves, organs or blood vessels. It is for these reasons that it often is difficult to target the exact origin of someone’s back pain.

Back pain can also be described as acute or chronic. The word “acute” derives from the Latin word for needles and is usually described as a severe, sharp sensation. The initial stage of an injury is called the acute phase. The word “chronic”, on the other hand, originated from the Greek word for time. Chronic back pain is pain that persists after a length of time, often months to years. Many back injuries tend to become chronic, especially when not treated properly during the acute phase. Chronic back pain is often experienced as a dull ache or constant nagging irritant.

Acute and chronic back pain sensations also travel different nervous system pathways inside the body. When you injure muscles or ligaments in your back, nerve endings called pain receptors pick up the pain impulses and transmit them to the spinal cord. From here, the pain message ascends to the brain. This process takes place at varying rates of speed depending on the size of the nerve fiber involved. Acute back pain tends to travel on faster, larger diameter fibers, while chronic back pain prefers smaller, slower pain fibers. Experts suggest that chronic back pain affects the brain’s limbic system, which is associated with emotional states. Anyone who has ever had a long-term painful back injury or regular back pain knows that negative or distressing emotions may accompany or perpetuate the initial injury.

The best way to treat chronic back pain is to prevent it. Although proficient early treatment does not always prevent an acute back pain injury from turning into a chronic problem, it is a good insurance policy. Early treatment is especially important with back pain injuries to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) to prevent them from becoming weaker, less elastic and more pain-sensitive. One of the best ways to treat both acute and chronic soft tissue injuries is a hands-on approach that works to repair the injured tissues. Some examples are joint and soft tissue manipulation and mobilization, typically performed by a chiropractor or osteopath.

A good chiropractor can make a big difference for most individuals experiencing either chronic or acute back pain. A chiropractor may suggest stretching exercises and make regular adjustments to a patient’s back in order to relieve back pain. Other good options for back pain are massage and physical therapy. A formal rehabilitation program at a health club or therapy clinic may also help to strengthen weakened and damaged muscles, especially the core stabilizers of the back which often are the cause of chronic back pain. The healing power of the hands-on approach is a positive experience that many people enjoy through therapeutic massage or body work.

The effects of a good massage go much deeper than the skin’s surface. Massage and chiropractic therapy can:

1) Help improve circulation of the blood and lower blood pressure while alleviating back pain. 2) Act as a detoxification system by propelling toxic waste products through the lymphatic system. 3) Help to improve muscle tone and prevent muscular atrophy resulting from inactivity or illness. 4) Reduce emotional stress and promote a sense of well-being.

How can something as simple as this hands-on therapy have so many positive benefits? A tense or painful muscle is one which is often chronically contracted. In an acute situation such as recent injury, the muscle can be in actual spasm. This contraction or spasm decreases the flow of blood to the muscle, which leads to a decrease in the nutrient and oxygen supply to the cells of the muscle and related nerves. A chronically contracted muscle will build up lactic acid, a sign of fatigue. This oxygen shortage and lactic acid buildup irritates the nerve cells, which perpetuates the contracted muscles – often resulting in discomfort and back pain. Massage and chiropractic therapy can help remove the lactic acid and other metabolic waste products from the cells and reverse this process, interrupting the vicious cycle of pain-spasm-pain. This can do wonders for most sufferers of back pain and have a lasting impact for many patients.

There are a multitude of massage styles which are beneficial to helping back pain. These options depend upon the individual’s needs and preferences. They include:

Swedish Massage: this is the basic “relaxation” style of body work, which uses long strokes, squeezing and kneading. The Swedish practitioner helps to improve circulation and back pain by working to loosen or relax the superficial layers of muscle. This type of massage is particularly useful for muscles and back pain which are the result of stress or a tough workout, as it is often more gentle than other styles.

Sports Massage: this form of massage therapy works on a deeper level of musculature or connective tissue. This style fits more with the “no pain, no gain” philosophy. The therapist uses slow, hard strokes and deep, sustained finger pressure to work deeply into the contracted muscles, fascia and tendons to help alleviate back pain. This technique increases flexibility, encourages muscles to work at their fullest capacity, and speeds up the healing process by reducing swelling following an injury. It is especially indicated for athletes and “week-end warriors” who suffer from tight or sore muscles and can be another successful solution for back pain.

Shiatsu and Acupressure: rather than being simply relaxing, this form of body work tends to be invigorating. Fingers, thumbs, fists and elbows are used to apply pressure to points along acupuncture meridians, which are believed to be the energy pathways of the body and which can help alleviate a patient’s back pain. The focus of this type of therapy is on relieving blocks in the pathways and re balancing the flow of energy.

Reflexology and Zone Therapy: reflexology works on the assumption that parts of the feet (as well as parts of the ears and hands) correspond to other parts of the body’s anatomy. In other words, stress or illness in a certain part of the body may show up as a painful or sensitive area on a specific area of the foot. Reflexologists apply pressure to the side, top or bottom of the feet to help reduce dysfunction in other parts of the body which can be helpful for those suffering through chronic back pain.

Not all techniques work for everyone, so make sure to inquire about the philosophy and style of the massage therapist you call. If your massage isn’t as satisfying as you had hoped or your back pain doesn’t go away, don’t give up, try another therapist!

Massage therapy schools are a cost-effective way to test out different styles of massage; senior students generally work for lower fees while they complete their internship. There are a few conditions in which massage would not be a good option for the treatment of back pain, such as inflammation, fever, significant swelling or very severe back pain. But for the garden variety aches and back pains that most of us experience, as well as for the general stresses of life, massage is an outstanding way to treat ourselves to a positive, revitalizing experience.
